Nutrition is the Foundation of Fitness

I am sure that you have heard the phrases,  'you are what you eat.'  and  'garbage in, garbage out.' Well guess what, in terms of nutrition that is 100% true. Here is why. The human body is constantly replacing it's cells. In fact every seven years the human body will replace all of it's cells. Your body uses  nutrients and energy from foods to build and repair or replace damaged tissue with new tissue.  So every time that you eat, some of that food becomes a part of you. By the time you are 65 your body will have disposed of over 100,000 pounds of food.  By making healthier food choices today you will ultimately choose your health of tomorrow.

Obesity and malnutrition are two pandemic's in the world today that may seem at first to be on opposite ends of the spectrum. However, this is not always true, a person can be obese and malnourished at the same time.

Obesity means having too much body fat. It is not the same as being overweight, which means weighing too much. A person may be overweight from extra muscle, bone, or water, as well as from having too much fat. For this reason using a body fat measurement may be a more accurate gauge for healthy individuals and athletes.

The term malnutrition refers to deficiencies, imbalances, and excesses of nutrients, alone or in combination. Malnutrition can be avoided by maintaining a well balanced diet with a variety of healthy food choices. And by including the proper balance of protein, carbohydrates, fats and the micronutrients associated with them. So if you have a BMI over 30 and are not eating a healthy diet then you may also be malnourished. Fad diets and crash diets will almost always lead to malnourishment.

Ensuring the proper balance of  these nutrients along with the appropriate amount of calories for an individual will allow a person to maintain a healthy weight. For otherwise healthy individuals adding exercise to the equation   may also allow for a lower body fat percentage as well. Because it is possible to be of normal weight or under weight and to have a high body-fat percentage. Picture the skinny guy with a beer gut.
